This week I am “Waiting On”…

Fangirl
by Rainbow Rowell

Published: 30th January 2014

From the author of the New York Times bestseller Eleanor & Park.

A coming-of-age tale of fan fiction, family and first love.

Cath is a Simon Snow fan.

Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan . . .

But for Cath, being a fan is her life — and she’s really good at it. She and her twin sister, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow series when they were just kids; it’s what got them through their mother leaving.

Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fan fiction, dressing up like the characters for every movie premiere.

Cath’s sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can’t let go. She doesn’t want to.

Now that they’re going to college, Wren has told Cath she doesn’t want to be roommates. Cath is on her own, completely outside of her comfort zone. She’s got a surly roommate with a charming, always-around boyfriend, a fiction-writing professor who thinks fan fiction is the end of the civilized world, a handsome classmate who only wants to talk about words . . . And she can’t stop worrying about her dad, who’s loving and fragile and has never really been alone.

For Cath, the question is: Can she do this?

And does she even want to move on if it means leaving Simon Snow behind?

Can she make it without Wren holding her hand? Is she ready to start living her own life? Writing her own stories?

I have heard great things about this book both from bloggers and non-blogger friends. I haven’t read anything by Rowell before, so I’m really interested to see if this book will live up to my expectations.

So this is the book I am looking forward to this week. Please let me know in the comments if you’re looking forward to it too, and what book you’re looking forward to this week.

This week I am “Waiting On”…

Shadowplay
by Laura Lam

Published: 7th January 2014.

For all fans of Robin Hobb and Tamora Pierce, this extraordinary crossover fantasy features a truly unique central character.

The circus lies behind Micah Grey in dust and ashes. He and the White Clown, Drystan, have taken refuge in the decaying Kymri Theatre, home to the once-great magician, Jasper Maske. Though no longer a circus performer, Micah must still conduct a balancing act between his past and his future, while both avoiding the renewed and embittered rivalry of the magicians of Ellada, and the Policiers who are convinced Micah played a part in the death of his old Ringmaster.

A tale of phantom wings, a clockwork hand, and the delicate unfurling of new love, Shadowplay continues Micah Grey’s extraordinary journey.

I have to admit that it was the cover I fell in love with, and then I read the blurb and I was intrigued. I’m not really a fan of Robin Hobb, but I love Tamora Pierce so I’m curious to see what this book is like.

Feather Bound
by Sarah Raughley

Published : 6th May 2014.

In contemporary New York, a swan girl must help her enemy destroy her best friend or risk being sold to the black market.

When Deanna’s missing friend Hyde turns up at his father’s funeral to claim his corporate empire and inheritance, she is swept into his glittering world of paparazzi and wealth.
But Deanna has a secret – and somebody knows. Someone who is out to get Hyde. And if she doesn’t play along, and help the enemy take Hyde down…she will be sold to the highest bidder in the black market for human swans.
Now Deanna is struggling to break free from the gilded cage that would trap her forever…

With this one I liked the cover, but the blurb was what sold it to me. I think it has a lot of potential, and I’m looking forward to getting my hands on this!

So those are the books I am looking forward to this week. Please let me know in the comments if you’re looking forward to them too, and what book you’re looking forward to this week.

Heartwood
by Freya Robertson

Published: 29th October 2013

A dying tree, a desperate quest, a love story, a last stand.

Chonrad, Lord of Barle, comes to the fortified temple of Heartwood for the Congressus peace talks, which Heartwood’s holy knights have called in an attempt to stave off war in Anguis. But the Arbor, Heartwood’s holy tree, is failing, and because the land and its people are one, it is imperative the nations try to make peace.

After the Veriditas, or annual Greening Ceremony, the Congressus takes place. The talks do not go well and tempers are rising when an army of warriors emerges from the river. After a fierce battle, the Heartwood knights discover that the water warriors have stolen the Arbor’s heart. For the first time in history, its leaves begin to fall…

The knights divide into seven groups and begin an epic quest to retrieve the Arbor, and save the land.

I had an email about this book recently, and I have to admit that I kinda fell in love with the cover. I think it looks absolutely gorgeous, and then I read the blurb. I think it sounds like a really interesting book and I’ve added it to my to-be-read list.

So that is the book I am looking forward to this week. Please let me know in the comments if you’re looking forward to it too, and what book you’re looking for to this week.

The Undead Pool (The Hollows #12)
by Kim Harrison

Published: 25th February 2014.

As far as I am aware no blurb has yet been released, so let’s all drool over the pretty cover 😉

Kim recently revealed the cover on her blog, where you can read her thoughts on the cover and some hints. There’s also a link to the first chapter which is up in full on her website.

So why am I so excited for this book? I haven’t even read EVER AFTER yet (but only because it seems impossible to get a copy in the UK at the moment)? Because I have really enjoyed the series so far, and it won’t be long until THE HOLLOWS draws to a close… Sad, but I’m excited to see how things turn out.

So that is the book I am looking forward to this week. Please let me know in the comments if you’re looking forward to it too, and what book you’re looking for to this week.

Waiting on Wednesday (29)

Yesterday (Tuesday) was not a good day, and as Monday was a Bank Holiday which I spent with my parents, no post ended up being written yesterday – sorry. It didn’t occur to me until it was too late (which was today) that I probably should have scheduled it. Instead I’m doing my second WoW of 2013. This is  a book I am really looking forward to, and have ever since I heard that the author was expanding their short story into a whole book.

This week I am “Waiting On”…

The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black

The Coldest Girl in Coldtown
by Holly Black

Published: 3rd September 2013

Tana lives in a world where walled cities called Coldtowns exist. In them, quarantined monsters and humans mingle in a decadently bloody mix of predator and prey. The only problem is, once you pass through Coldtown’s gates, you can never leave.

One morning, after a perfectly ordinary party, Tana wakes up surrounded by corpses. The only other survivors of this massacre are her exasperatingly endearing ex-boyfriend, infected and on the edge, and a mysterious boy burdened with a terrible secret. Shaken and determined, Tana enters a race against the clock to save the three of them the only way she knows how: by going straight to the wicked, opulent heart of Coldtown itself.

The Coldest Girl in Coldtown is a wholly original story of rage and revenge, of guilt and horror, and of love and loathing from bestselling and acclaimed author Holly Black.

I thought this was a really neat concept when I read the short story, so I cannot wait to see how it has been translated into a whole book.

So that is the book I am looking forward to this week. Please let me know in the comments if you’re looking forward to it too, and what book you’re looking for to this week.

Waiting on Wednesday (28)

So apparently my organisational skills suck this week. There was supposed to be a review from me on Monday, which I have now re-scheduled for tomorrow (Thursday), and I was supposed to take part in Top Ten Tuesday but that didn’t happen. I just wanted to take this opportunity to apologise for that, and to say that hopefully from here on I won’t suck at scheduling posts… Anyway, here’s my WoW – my first in 2013.

Affliction (Anita Blake #22) by Laurell K. Hamilton

Published: 2nd July 2013

Micah is called back home by his estranged family, because his father, a county sheriff, has been attacked and is terribly injured. Anita and Nathaniel are going with him for moral support and to meet his family under very trying circumstances.

Micah has been estranged from his family for a decade, deliberately turning his back on them to protect them from the sadistic killer who once led his leopard pack. But now Micah’s father lies dying, rotting away inside from some strange ailment that has his doctors whispering about “zombie disease.”

Anita—who understands zombies better than anyone—knows there’s more to it than that. While zombies have unlovable traits, being one doesn’t cause human beings to rot in agony. She needs to solve that mystery—but now a more immediate issue is pressing: Micah’s father may have only five days to live.

Something Like Normal
by Trish Doller

Published: 26th October 2012.

When Travis returns home from a stint in Afghanistan, his parents are splitting up, his brother’s stolen his girlfriend and his car, and he’s haunted by nightmares of his best friend’s death. It’s not until Travis runs into Harper, a girl he’s had a rocky relationship with since middle school, that life actually starts looking up. And as he and Harper see more of each other, he begins to pick his way through the minefield of family problems and post-traumatic stress to the possibility of a life that might resemble normal again. Travis’s dry sense of humor, and incredible sense of honor, make him an irresistible and eminently lovable hero.

I have wanted to read this book for a while, and I almost added it to my last amazon.co.uk order but it wouldn’t have arrived in time, so it is definitely going in my next shopping basket. Who knows, I may see it on the shelves before then…

Demon Eyes (Witch Eyes#2) [Goodreads]
by Scott Tracey

Published: 8th October 2012

Demons don’t die without a fight…

After destroying the demon Lucien, Braden—son of Belle Dam’s most powerful warlock, Jason Thorpe—doesn’t need the power of his witch eyes to see that everything in his life is turning against him: friends, family, and even his visions. When disturbing nightmares of Lucien’s return haunt him, Braden discovers that the simmering feud between the city’s two witch dynasties is fast approaching its explosive boiling point.

While struggling to come to terms with his attraction to Trey, Catherine Lansing’s son who should be his mortal enemy, a diabolical plan starts to unveil before Braden’s eyes. Young women are disappearing from Belle Dam, and as he investigates, Braden is forced to explore the dangerous unknown power within himself. But when the truth about his family is revealed, Braden must pay a terrible price.

I really enjoyed the first book in this series, and I look forward to seeing if Tracey does as good with this book. Second books in series seem to be really hard, so I look forward to seeing what Tracey does with his second book.

Velveteen (Velveteen #1) [Goodreads]
by Daniel Marks

Published: 9th October 2012

Velveteen Monroe is dead. At 16, she was kidnapped and murdered by a madman named Bonesaw. But that’s not the problem.

The problem is she landed in purgatory. And while it’s not a fiery inferno, it’s certainly no heaven. It’s gray, ashen, and crumbling more and more by the day, and everyone has a job to do. Which doesn’t leave Velveteen much time to do anything about what’s really on her mind.

Bonesaw.

Velveteen aches to deliver the bloody punishment her killer deserves. And she’s figured out just how to do it. She’ll haunt him for the rest of his days.

It’ll be brutal… and awesome.

But crossing the divide between the living and the dead has devastating consequences. Velveteen’s obsessive haunting cracks the foundations of purgatory and jeopardizes her very soul. A risk she’s willing to take—except fate has just given her reason to stick around: an unreasonably hot and completely off-limits coworker.

Velveteen can’t help herself when it comes to breaking rules… or getting revenge. And she just might be angry enough to take everyone down with her.

I really like the cover of this book, and I think the blurb sounds interesting. It will be interesting seeing which path Velveteen will take… either would be an interesting read, I think.

So that is the books that I am “waiting on” this week. What book(s) are you waiting on this week? Leave a comment and let me know.

Nicholas St. North and the Battle of the Nightmare King (The Guardians of Childhood #1) (MG)
by William Joyce and Laura Geringer

Published: 13th September 2012

Before SANTA was SANTA, he was North, Nicholas St. North—a daredevil swordsman whose prowess with double scimitars was legendary. Like any swashbuckling young warrior, North seeks treasure and adventure, leading him to the fiercely guarded village of Santoff Claussen, said to be home to the greatest treasure in all the East, and to an even greater wizard, Ombric Shalazar. But when North arrives, legends of riches have given way to terrors of epic proportions! North must decide whether to seek his fortune…or save the village.

When our rebellious hero gets sucked into the chaos (literally), the fight becomes very personal. The Nightmare King and his evil Fearlings are ruling the night, owning the shadows, and sending waves of fear through all of Santoff Clausen. For North, this is a battle worth fighting…and, he’s not alone. There are five other Guardians out there. He only has to find them in time.

Doesn’t this sound really cool?! I’ve been looking forward to reading this for a while – thankfully there’s not much longer to wait!

Wolf Pact (Wolf Pact #1) (YA)
by Melissa de la Cruz

Publication: 6th September 2012

From the bestselling author of Blue Bloods, comes a series that will reinvent the myth of the werewolf in the same way that Blue Bloods did with vampires—with style and NYC flair!

Lawson and his brothers escaped from the underworld and now lead desperate, dangerous lives. They’re pursued by the Hounds of Hell from one town to the next, never calling any place home. But when the hounds finally catch up with them and capture the girl Lawson loves, the hunters become the hunted. Lawson will stop at nothing to track down the hounds, even if the chances of saving Tala are slim…

The only hope he has lies in Bliss Llewellyn. Bliss, too, has lost someone to the beasts and will do anything to get them back—even if it means joining forces with the insolent, dangerously good-looking boy with a wolf’s soul.

Belles (Belles #1) (YA)
by Jen Calonita

Published: 11th September 2012

Fifteen-year-old Isabelle Scott loves her life by the boardwalk on the supposed wrong side of the tracks in North Carolina. But when tragedy strikes, a social worker sends her to live with a long-lost uncle and his preppy privileged family. Isabelle is taken away from everything she’s ever known, and, unfortunately, inserting her into the glamorous lifestyle of Emerald Cove doesn’t go so well. Her cousin Mirabelle Monroe isn’t thrilled to share her life with an outsider, and, in addition to dealing with all the rumors and backstabbing that lurk beneath their classmates’ Southern charm, a secret is unfolding that will change both girls’ lives forever.

Personal Effects (YA)
by E. M. Kokie

Publication: 11th September 2012

After his older brother dies in Iraq, Matt makes a discovery that rocks his beliefs about strength, bravery, and honor in this page-turning debut.

Ever since his brother, T.J., was killed in Iraq, Matt feels like he’s been sleepwalking through life — failing classes, getting into fights, and avoiding his dad’s lectures about following in his brother’s footsteps. T.J.’s gone, but Matt can’t shake the feeling that if only he could get his hands on his brother’s stuff from Iraq, he’d be able to make sense of his death. But as Matt searches for answers about T.J.’s death, he faces a shocking revelation about T.J.’s life that suggests he may not have known T.J. as well as he thought. What he learns challenges him to stand up to his father, honor his brother’s memory, and take charge of his own life. With compassion, humor, and a compelling narrative voice, E. M. Kokie explores grief, social mores, and self-discovery in a provocative first novel.

Vessel (YA)
by Sarah Beth Durst

Publication: 11th September 2012

In a desert world of sandstorms and sand-wolves, a teen girl must defy the gods to save her tribe in this mystical, atmospheric tale from the author of Drink, Slay, Love.

Liyana has trained her entire life to be the vessel of a goddess. The goddess will inhabit Liyana’s body and use magic to bring rain to the desert. But Liyana’s goddess never comes. Abandoned by her angry tribe, Liyana expects to die in the desert. Until a boy walks out of the dust in search of her.

Korbyn is a god inside his vessel, and a trickster god at that. He tells Liyana that five other gods are missing, and they set off across the desert in search of the other vessels. For the desert tribes cannot survive without the magic of their gods. But the journey is dangerous, even with a god’s help. And not everyone is willing to believe the trickster god’s tale.

The closer she grows to Korbyn, the less Liyana wants to disappear to make way for her goddess. But she has no choice: She must die for her tribe to live. Unless a trickster god can help her to trick fate—or a human girl can muster some magic of her own.

I love all four covers, though my favourite has to be Vessel.

So those are the books that I am “waiting on” this week. What book(s) are you waiting on this week? Leave a comment and let me know.
