Dead Reckoning is the eleventh book in Charlaine Harris’s best-selling Sookie Stackhouse series, and it follow on pretty much from where the previous book in the series left off. This is not the place to start if you are new to the series. I have been a fan of this series for a while, and I really looked forward to reading this latest installment.

Curling up with a good book

As far back as I can remember I have always been an avid reader. I can remember begging my Mum to read me just one more chapter before I had to go to sleep – and okay, that was mostly because as a child sleep and I did not co-exist easily. Books have been an important part of my life for as long as I can remember. If you asked me to pick between food and a good book, I would undoubtedly pick the book – what’s food to a good read?

I’ve spent a lot of time reading lately. Mostly in an attempt to ignore the fact that I have an essay due in a months time on Robinson Crusoe & Foe – did I mention I am doing a part-time English Masters with the OU? – and partly because there have been some books published by favourite authors and I’ve been bored. Bored + Becki = Reading. Not always, but most of the time.

Don’t worry if you don’t hear from me again until mid-June, I will be essay writing – or more probably procrastinating about essay writing. Still, I may try to get in a review or two, we’ll see.

Review:

Hard Bitten is a rip-roaring read for any vampire lover.

It is the fourth book in Neill’s A Chicagoland Vampires Novel, and continues on from the plot of Hard Bitten. Neill has managed to balance the action and the romance plots in the series brilliantly, so neither overpowers the other and at times they seamlessly merge. Neill does however follow the conventions of the Paranormal Romance genre and have a first person narrator – everything is told from Merit’s point of view, and it works because Neill resists the temptation to tell the reader too much. Neill also follows the convention that Chicago is gangland, albeit with vampires and shifters and other creatures of myth instead of the usual gangster/mobster.

Review:

This is the seventh book in Nalini Singh’s A Psy-Changeling Novel and you would be forgiven for thinking that it follows the precedent set by the previous five books; it doesn’t. In Blaze of Memory Singh moves away from the Changeling world that has dominated the previous five books, and instead gives us a peek into the world of the Forgotten – the descendents of the Psy who fled Silence, unwilling to give up their emotions, their humanity.

Review:

Let me preface this review by saying that I am a fan of the series, and have been following it for a while. This is the fourth book in The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series. It continues the story-arc from The Sorceress and brings the end of the world ever closer. In this book, perhaps more than in any other in the series, there is a definite sense of battle looming in the background – it feels like the Apocalypse will occur within days of the events of the book. There is a very definite sense that the events of this book will set the stage for what is to come.

This is the sixth book in Nalini Singh’s A Psy-Changeling Novel series, and its plot follows pretty much the same plot arc as set out in the earlier books. So if you’ve read the previous books in the series (which is advisable, as the plots of the series are interwoven) then don’t expect a change in formula.

This is not the first fictional war story I have read, nor is it the first one based on a “true” account – for my A-Level (or was it AS?) English Literature I was obliged to devour several books and poems about World War II – nor is it even the first YA book with this theme I have read. What is new for me is the subject matter. This book is about the travesties that Russia under Stalin’s rule committed, particularly to the Baltic states – though the Lina and her family originate from Lithuania. It was an eye-opening read, as I honestly had no idea what happened in those states between 1941 and 1991 (it may have started earlier, I don’t know).

Let me preface this review by saying that I read both Wondrous Strange and Darklight before I read this book, and I liked the way Livingston handled both the plot and the world in both books – Livingston remembered when writing about this world that according to the old stories the Fae/the Fair Folk are not nice and not human, whatever they pretend.

Hello world!

Welcome to The Flutterby Room. This is my first official post to the blog, and I have to say I’m kinda excited šŸ™‚ The whole idea of this blog is to create a place where I can talk about not only the books I read, but my favourite books and my favourite authors. But first, a little bit about myself.

My name is Becki, I’m 24 years old and I live in the UK. I’m currently studying to do my Masters in English with the OU. I’m something of a bibliophile, and I currently have 295 fiction books in my collection. Most of these fall into the (rather broad) category of fantasy or horror, though not all of them. I have several favourite authors, and I tend to have favourite series more than I do favourite books. I’m not particularly bothered if the books I read fall into either adult of YA categories – and for favoured authors I’m prepared to explore outside of these boundaries.

Unfortunately I won’t be able to update this blog again until after the 7th April, as I have several outside commitments that must take precedence – including an essay on Coriolanus. I’m really sorry about this, but I wanted to get everything set up before I started in earnest.

I look forward to seeing you when I can get back.
