Waiting on Wednesday (13)

Just a quick note to let everyone know I am now out of hospital and am back home taking things slowly. Glad to see that the scheduled posts worked – I knew there was a reason to get ahead with reviews. If you’re awaiting an email reply from me don’t worry – I will get to you soon. Sorry that there hasn’t been a whole lot of content on here other than reviews, but hopefully things will go back to normal . . .

Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating. As always, the summary provided is from Goodreads.com This week I am “Waiting On” two books which I think sound like they’ve got potential.

The Elemental SeriesStorm (Elemental #1)
by Brigid Kemmerer

Published: June 13th 2012.

Ever since her ex-boyfriend spread those lies about her, Becca Chandler is suddenly getting all the guys—all the ones she doesn’t want. Then she saves Chris Merrick from a beating in the school parking lot. Chris is different. Way different: he can control water—just like his brothers can control fire, wind, and earth. They’re powerful. Dangerous. Marked for death.

And now that she knows the truth, so is Becca.

Secrets are hard to keep when your life’s at stake. When Hunter, the mysterious new kid around school, turns up with a talent for being in the wrong place at the right time, Becca thinks she can trust him. The storm is coming . . .

My Life Next Door
by Huntley Fitzpatrick

Published: June 14th 2012

A gorgeous debut about family, friendship, first romance, and how to be true to one person you love without betraying another

“One thing my mother never knew, and would disapprove of most of all, was that I watched the Garretts. All the time.”

The Garretts are everything the Reeds are not. Loud, numerous, messy, affectionate. And every day from her balcony perch, seventeen-year-old Samantha Reed wishes she was one of them . . . until one summer evening, Jase Garrett climbs her terrace and changes everything. As the two fall fiercely in love, Jase’s family makes Samantha one of their own. Then in an instant, the bottom drops out of her world and she is suddenly faced with an impossible decision. Which perfect family will save her? Or is it time she saved herself?

A dreamy summer read, full of characters who stay with you long after the story is over.

I think both books sound really interesting and like they could be absolutely brilliant reads! And I have to admit that I love both of the covers too.

What are you “Waiting On” this week?

Waiting on Wednesday (12)

First, sorry there was no post yesterday. I had to take my dog to the Emergency Vet at 4am on Monday and I only got him back Tuesday evening and he’s got LOTS of meds to take. Also I came down with a 24 hour bug on the Monday. So not a fun couple of days for me 😦

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.

As always, the summary provided is from Goodreads.com This week there is just one book I am eagerly “Waiting On”…

Darkness Before Dawn
by J. A. London

Published: 29th May 2012

This electrifying new trilogy blends the best of paranormal and dystopian storytelling in a world where the war is over. And the vampires won.

Humans huddle in their walled cities, supplying blood in exchange for safety. But not even that is guaranteed. Dawn has lost her entire family and now reluctantly serves as the delegate to Lord Valentine, the most powerful vampire for miles. It isn’t until she meets Victor, Valentine’s son, that she realizes not all vampires are monsters….

Darkness Before Dawn is a fresh new story with captivating characters, unexpected plot twists, a fascinating setting, and a compelling voice. Written under the name J. A. London by a talented mother-son team, the trilogy is perfect for fans of True Blood and the House of Night and Morganville Vampires series.

I’m “Waiting On” this because I think the blurb sounds really awesome. I also love the cover – it’s really moody. I like the fact that it’s only made up of black, white, and grey – so very different from the colourful colours of most YA books.

Waiting on Wednesday (11)

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.

This week I am waiting on the final book in The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series. The summary is from Goodreads.com

The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel #6The Enchantress (The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel #6)
by Michael Scott

Published: 24th May 2012

The two that are one must become the one that is all. One to save the world, one to destroy it.

San Francisco:
Nicholas and Perenelle Flamel have one day left to live, and one job left to do. They must defend San Francisco. The monsters gathered on Alcatraz Island have been released and are heading toward the city. If they are not stopped, they will destroy everyone and everything in their path.

But even with the help of two of the greatest warriors from history and myth, will the Sorceress and the legendary Alchemyst be able to defend the city? Or is it the beginning of the end of the human race?

Danu Talis:
Sophie and Josh Newman traveled ten thousand years into the past to Danu Talis when they followed Dr. John Dee and Virginia Dare. And it’s on this legendary island that the battle for the world begins and ends.

Scathach, Prometheus, Palamedes, Shakespeare, Saint-Germain, and Joan of Arc are also on the island. And no one is sure what—or who—the twins will be fighting for.

Today the battle for Danu Talis will be won or lost.
But will the twins of legend stand together?
Or will they stand apart—
one to save the world and one to destroy it?

I have been really enjoying reading this series, and I cannot wait to get my hand on this – the sixth and final book. If the first five books are anything to go by, this should be an interesting read.

So, that was the book I’m “Waiting On” this week – what are you “Waiting On”?

Waiting on Wednesday (10)

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.

This week there’s just one book I’m “Waiting On”.

A Breath of Eyre
by Eve Marie Mont

Published: 14th May 2012.

Emma Townsend has always believed in stories—the ones she reads voraciously, and the ones she creates in her head. Perhaps it’s because she feels like an outsider at her exclusive prep school, or because her stepmother doesn’t come close to filling the void left by her mother’s death. And her only romantic prospect—apart from a crush on her English teacher—is Gray Newman, a long-time friend who just adds to Emma’s confusion. But escape soon arrives in an old leather-bound copy of Jane Eyre…

Reading of Jane’s isolation sparks a deep sense of kinship. Then fate takes things a leap further when a lightning storm catapults Emma right into Jane’s body and her nineteenth-century world. As governess at Thornfield, Emma has a sense of belonging she’s never known—and an attraction to the brooding Mr. Rochester. Now, moving between her two realities and uncovering secrets in both, Emma must decide whether her destiny lies in the pages of Jane’s story, or in the unwritten chapters of her own…

I think this is a really neat idea, and I’m curious to see how it will play out.

What are you waiting on this week?

Waiting on Wednesday (9)

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.

This week there are three books I am “Waiting On” which come out in the next week in the UK (according to Amazon.co.uk). I expect that there will be a couple which will be quite popular.

A Blood of Eden NovelThe Immortal Rules (A Blood of Eden Novel) (YA)
by Julie Kagawa

Published:4th May 2012

In a future world, Vampires reign. Humans are blood cattle. And one girl will search for the key to save humanity.

Allison Sekemoto survives in the Fringe, the outermost circle of a vampire city. By day, she and her crew scavenge for food. By night, any one of them could be eaten.

Some days, all that drives Allie is her hatred of them. The vampires who keep humans as blood cattle. Until the night Allie herself is attacked—and given the ultimate choice. Die… or become one of the monsters.

Faced with her own mortality, Allie becomes what she despises most. To survive, she must learn the rules of being immortal, including the most important: go long enough without human blood, and you will go mad.

Then Allie is forced to flee into the unknown, outside her city walls. There she joins a ragged band of humans who are seeking a legend—a possible cure to the disease that killed off most of humankind and created the rabids, the mindless creatures who threaten humans and vampires alike.

But it isn’t easy to pass for human. Especially not around Zeke, who might see past the monster inside her. And Allie soon must decide what—and who—is worth dying for.

There has been quite a lot of hype about this series on the blogsphere, and I have read a lot of mixed reactions to it. I’m curious to get my hands on it and see for myself what it is like.

Enchanted (YA)
by Alethea Kontis

Published: 8th May 2012

It isn’t easy being the rather overlooked and unhappy youngest sibling to sisters named for the other six days of the week. Sunday’s only comfort is writing stories, although what she writes has a terrible tendency to come true.

When Sunday meets an enchanted frog who asks about her stories, the two become friends. Soon that friendship deepens into something magical. One night Sunday kisses her frog goodbye and leaves, not realizing that her love has transformed him back into Rumbold, the crown prince of Arilland—and a man Sunday’s family despises.

The prince returns to his castle, intent on making Sunday fall in love with him as the man he is, not the frog he was. But Sunday is not so easy to woo. How can she feel such a strange, strong attraction for this prince she barely knows? And what twisted secrets lie hidden in his past – and hers?

Seen this one a lot on the blogsphere too, especially during Fairytale Fortnight. Really excited to get my hands on this one 🙂

In Honor (YA)
by Jesi Kirby

Published: 8th May 2012

Hours after her brother’s military funeral, Honor opens the last letter Finn ever sent. In her grief, she interprets his note as a final request and spontaneously decides to go to California to fulfill it.

Honor gets as far as the driveway before running into Rusty, Finn’s best friend since third grade and his polar opposite. She hasn’t seen Rusty in ages, but it’s obvious he is as arrogant and stubborn as ever—not to mention drop-dead gorgeous. Despite Honor’s better judgment, the two set off together on a voyage from Texas to California. Along the way, they find small and sometimes surprising ways to ease their shared loss and honor Finn’s memory—but when shocking truths are revealed at the end of the road, will either of them be able to cope with the consequences?

Saw this on “Waiting On” a couple of weeks back (I think) and thought it sounded really neat. I’m looking forward to getting my hands on this.

So, those are the books I’m “Waiting On” this week. What are you “Waiting On”?

Waiting on Wednesday (8)

Struck (YA)
by Jennifer Bosworth

Published: 26th April 2012 by Doubleday Childrens

Mia Price is a lightning addict. She’s survived countless strikes, but her craving to connect to the energy in storms endangers her life and the lives of those around her.

Los Angeles, where lightning rarely strikes, is one of the few places Mia feels safe from her addiction. But when an earthquake devastates the city, her haven is transformed into a minefield of chaos and danger. The beaches become massive tent cities. Downtown is a crumbling wasteland, where a traveling party moves to a different empty building each night, the revelers drawn to the destruction by a force they cannot deny. Two warring cults rise to power, and both see Mia as the key to their opposing doomsday prophecies. They believe she has a connection to the freak electrical storm that caused the quake, and to the far more devastating storm that is yet to come.

Mia wants to trust the enigmatic and alluring Jeremy when he promises to protect her, but she fears he isn’t who he claims to be. In the end, the passion and power that brought them together could be their downfall. When the final disaster strikes, Mia must risk unleashing the full horror of her strength to save the people she loves, or lose everything.

I am waiting on this book because it just sounds interesting. Lightning isn’t something I like personally, but I do like the idea of this book. I can’t wait to get my hands on it 🙂

Sookie Stackhouse #12Deadlocked (Sookie Stackhouse #12)
by Charlaine Harris

Published: 1st May 2012 by Gollancz

With Felipe de Castro, the Vampire King of Louisiana (and Arkansas and Nevada), in town, it’s the worst possible time for a body to show up in Eric Northman’s front yard—especially the body of a woman whose blood he just drank.
Now, it’s up to Sookie and Bill, the official Area Five investigator, to solve the murder. Sookie thinks that, at least this time, the dead girl’s fate has nothing to do with her. But she is wrong. She has an enemy, one far more devious than she would ever suspect, who’s out to make Sookie’s world come crashing down.

I really enjoy reading about Sookie’s adventures, so of course I cannot wait to get my hands on this. I’m super excited to see what happens to Sookie next!!

The Queen of the Dead #1Silence (The Queen of the Dead #1) (YA)
by Michelle Sagara

Published: 1st May 2012 by DAW

“It began in the graveyard. Ever since her boyfriend Nathan died in a tragic accident Emma had been coming to the graveyard at night. During the day she went through the motions at her prep school, in class, with her friends, but that’s all it was. But tonight was different. Tonight Emma and her dog were not alone in the cemetery. There were two others there—Eric, who had just started at her school, and an ancient woman who looked as though she were made of rags. And when they saw Emma there, the old woman reached out to her with a grip as chilling as death….”

I love the cover of this book, and I think it sounds really interesting. I’m especially intrigued by the series title, so I cannot wait to get my hands on this.

The Inn at Boonsboro Trilogy Volume 1The Next Always (The Inn at Boonsboro Trilogy Volume 1)
by Nora Roberts

Published: 3rd May 2012 by Piatkus

The historic hotel in BoonsBoro, Maryland, has endured war and peace, changing hands, even rumored hauntings. Now it’s getting a major facelift from the Montgomery brothers and their eccentric mother. As the architect of the family, Beckett’s social life consists mostly of talking shop over pizza and beer. But there’s another project he’s got his eye on: the girl he’s been waiting to kiss since he was fifteen…

I occasionally like reading Nora Roberts books, and this series caught my attention. I like reading series in order, which is quite handy as none of the books are out in the UK yet, but I cannot wait to get started 🙂

So those are the books I’m waiting on this week, what are you waiting on?

So Ava sets out to get her life back. But killing vampires begins a battle that could destroy everything she is working toward. In the end, Ava’s decisions will forever change her life and the lives of those she loves.

Want to find out more about this book? Then you can find it on Goodreads here.

I think this book sounds really interesting, and it seems to have lots of good reviews. I also like the fact that this book harks back to how vampires used to be pre-Twilight (how I remember them). I’ve also heard that this book is supposed to be a little bit Buffy the Vampire Slayer and a little bit Supernatural which sounds like it could be an interesting mix.

What book(s) are you waiting on this week?

Waiting on Wednesday (6)

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.

This week as I’m still “waiting on” the book I was last week, I thought I would post a couple of books that whilst they already published I can’t wait to get my hands on them.

Immortal City by Scott Seer, UK edition cover.

Immortal City (Immortal City #1)
by Scott Speer

Jackson Godspeed is the hottest young Angel in a city filled with them. He’s days away from becoming a full Guardian, and people around the world are already competing for the chance to be watched over by him. Everyone’s obsessed with the Angels and the lucky people they protect – everyone except for Madison Montgomery.

Maddy’s the one girl in Angel City who doesn’t breathlessly follow the Angels on TV and gossip blogs. When she meets Jackson, she doesn’t recognize him. But Jackson is instantly captivated by her, and against all odds the two fall in love.

Maddy is swiftly caught up in Jackson’s scene, a world of glamour, paparazzi – and murder. A serial killer is on the loose, leaving dead Angels’ wings for the police to find on the Walk of Fame. Even the Guardians are powerless to protect themselves in the face of this threat … and this time it’s up to Maddy to save Jackson.

This sounds like it could be an interesting read. Not really a fan of the cover. But I want to give this a try. It kinda sounds like it will be a “male version” of The Hills or Strange Candy both of which I like so we’ll see…

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games #1)
by Suzanne Collins

Could you survive on your own, in the wild, with everyone out to make sure you don’t live to see the morning?

In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV. Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she is forced to represent her district in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before-and survival.

I’ve heard some good things about this book, and the film seems really interesting. I really want to pick this up and see if it lives up to my expectations, or not.

Whilst you’re here, why don’t you check out my one year blogverary giveaway (it’s international): a signed copy of Nature Mage by Duncan Pile. Check out my review here, and for details on how to enter click here.

Curse Workers 3

Black Heart by Holly Black, UK edition cover.

Black Heart (Curse Workers #3)
by Holly Black

Published: 19th April 2012

Cassel Sharpe knows he’s been used as an assassin, but he’s trying to put all that behind him. He’s trying to be good, even though he grew up in a family of con artists and cheating comes as easily as breathing to him. He’s trying to do the right thing, even though the girl he loves is inextricably connected with crime. And he’s trying to convince himself that working for the Feds is smart, even though he’s been raised to believe the government is the enemy.

But with a mother on the lam, the girl he loves about to take her place in the Mob, and new secrets coming to light, the line between what’s right and what’s wrong becomes increasingly blurred. When the Feds ask Cassel to do the one thing he said he would never do again, he needs to sort out what’s a con and what’s truth. In a dangerous game and with his life on the line, Cassel may have to make his biggest gamble yet—this time on love.

I’m really looking forward to reading the conclusion to Holly Black’s fantastic Curse Workers series. It is a series I have really enjoyed so far, and I cannot wait to get my hands on the book – if I lived in the States I could get my hands on it now, but as it is I have to wait.

Darkness Rising #2

The Calling by Kelley Armstrong, UK edition cover.

The Calling (Darkness Rising #2)
by Kelley Armstrong

Published: 5th April 2012

In The Calling, the sizzling second book in the Darkness Rising trilogy, New York Times bestselling author Kelley Armstrong pumps up the romance, danger, and suspense that left readers of The Gathering clamoring for more.

Maya Delaney’s paw-print birthmark is the sign of what she truly is—a skin-walker. She can run faster, climb higher, and see better than nearly anyone else. Experiencing intense connections with the animals that roam the woods outside her home, Maya knows it’s only a matter of time before she’s able to Shift and become one of them. And she believes there may be others in her small town with surprising talents.

Now, Maya and her friends have been forced to flee from their homes during a forest fire they suspect was deliberately set. Then they’re kidnapped, and after a chilling helicopter crash, they find themselves in the Vancouver Island wilderness with nothing but their extraordinary abilities to help them get back home. Plentiful action and romance in this second installment in the Darkness Rising series will keep readers enthralled to the very last page!

I cannot say how excited I am to get my hands on this book. I’ve noticed a few people have managed to get hold of ARC copies of the book and I am super jealous!! Based on Kelley’s previous books – both YA and adult – I don’t see how this can be anything other than brilliant. I can’t wait to get started!!
