Review:

The Rogue is the second book in Trudi Canavan’s Traitor Spy Trilogy, which is sent twenty years after the events of her Black Magician Trilogy. This means that there are plenty of familiar faces and places, for those who have read Canavan’s previous works, but we are also introduced to some new ones in this book.

Waiting on Wednesday (3)

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.

This week I’m going to have a couple of books, all have been published already, but because I’m taking part in Black March I’ve got to wait until April to get them so I thought they’d count.

All blurbs taken from Goodreads.com

Meet Josephine Foster, or Zo Jo as she’s called in the biz. The best pint-sized photographer of them all, Jo doesn’t mind doing what it takes to get that perfect shot, until she’s sent on an undercover assignment to shoot Ned Hartnett—teen superstar and the only celebrity who’s ever been kind to her—at an exclusive rehabilitation retreat in Boston. The money will be enough to pay for Jo’s dream: real photography classes, and maybe even quitting her paparazzi gig for good. Everyone wants to know what Ned’s in for. But Jo certainly doesn’t know what she’s in for: falling in love with Ned was never supposed to be part of her assignment.

I’ve seen a couple of reviews for this, and I thought it sounded interesting. Once I read the blurb I knew I had to read this. I’m really looking forward to reading this and it will definitely be one of the books I buy in April.

Faery Tales and Nightmares by Melissa Marr

Faery Tales and Nightmares
by Melissa Marr

Published: 1st March 2012

Dangerous promises and beguiling threats swirl together in a dozen stories of enchantments dark and light by New York Times bestselling author Melissa Marr. Uncanny and unexpected creatures appear from behind bushes, rise from beneath the seas, or manifest from seasonal storms to pursue the objects of their attention—with amorous or sinister intent—relentlessly.

Saw this on Melissa Marr’s website and as I liked her Wicked Lovely series and her book Graveminder I thought I’d give this one a go. I also enjoy reading short story collections by authors whose series I’ve liked reading.

Pretty Crooked by Elisa Ludwig

Pretty Crooked (Pretty Crooked #1)

Published: 13th March 2012

Willa’s secret plan seems all too simple: take from the rich kids at Valley Prep and give to the poor ones.

Yet Willa’s turn as Robin Hood at her ultra-exclusive high school is anything but. Bilking her “friends”-known to everyone as the Glitterati-without them suspecting a thing, is far from easy. Learning how to pick pockets and break into lockers is as difficult as she’d thought it’d be. Delivering care packages to the scholarship girls, who are ostracized just for being from the “wrong” side of town, is way more fun than she’d expected.

The complication Willa didn’t expect, though, is Aidan Murphy, Valley Prep’s most notorious (and gorgeous) ace-degenerate. His mere existence is distracting Willa from what matters most to her-evening the social playing field between the have and have-nots. There’s no time for crushes and flirting with boys, especially conceited and obnoxious trust-funders like Aidan.

But when the cops start investigating the string of burglaries at Valley Prep and the Glitterati begin to seek revenge, could he wind up being the person that Willa trusts most?

I will admit that this is a little down to cover love – it looks amazing! But, I also like the premise that Willa is a Robin Hood figure. Can’t wait to read.

What are you looking forward to getting your hands on this week?

Top Ten Tuesday (1)

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish. This feature was created because they are particularly fond of lists at The Broke and the Bookish. They’d love to share their lists with other bookish folks and would LOVE to see your top ten lists!

This weeks Top Ten topic is:

Top Ten Books On My Spring To-Be-Read list

These books are in no particular order and all the blurbs are from Goodreads.com

Born Wicked by Jessica Spotswood

1. Born Wicked (The Cahill Witch Chronicles #1) by Jessica Spotswood

Everybody knows Cate Cahill and her sisters are eccentric. Too pretty, too reclusive, and far too educated for their own good. But the truth is even worse: they’re witches. And if their secret is discovered by the priests of the Brotherhood, it would mean an asylum, a prison ship–or an early grave.

Before her mother died, Cate promised to protect her sisters. But with six months to choose between marriage and the Sisterhood, she might not be able to keep her word… especially after she finds her mother’s diary, uncovering a secret that could spell her family’s destruction. Desperate to find alternatives to their fate, Cate stars scouring banned books and questioning rebellious new friends, all while juggling tea parties, shocking marriage proposals, and a forbidden romance with the completely unsuitable Finn Belastra.

If what her mother wrote is true, the Cahill girls aren’t safe. Not from the Brotherhood, the Sisterhood — not even from each other.

This is on my TBR pile at home, and I’m really looking forward to getting to this book. I’ve heard some good things about it, and I can’t wait 🙂

Blood Bound by Rachel Vincent, UK cover

2. Blood Bound (Unbound #1) by Rachel Vincent

Bound by blood, condemned by fate

As a bloodtracker, Liv is extremely powerful. And in a world where power is a commodity that can get you killed, Liv’s learnt to survive by her own rules.

Rule number one? Trust no one.

But when a friend’s daughter goes missing, Liv is bound by a potent magical oath. She can’t rest until the child is safe.
And that means trusting her dangerous ex, Cam.

A sinister prophecy tells that she and Cam will be the death of each other, yet Liv’s tired of being a slave to destiny. She’s ready to play the forces controlling her world at their own game.

This is also on my TBR pile at home. I’ve heard some really great things about this book, and I’ve really enjoyed Vincent’s Shifter series and the first book in her Soul Screamers series. This should be awesome.

Abandon by Meg Cabot, UK cover.

3. Abandon (Abandon Trilogy #1) by Meg Cabbot

Pierce knows what it’s like to die, because she’s done it before.

Though she tries returning to the life she knew before the accident, Pierce can’t help but feel at once a part of this world, and apart from it. Yet she’s never alone . . . because someone is always watching her. Escape from the realm of the dead is impossible when someone there wants you back. But now she’s moved to a new town. Maybe at her new school, she can start fresh. Maybe she can stop feeling so afraid.Only she can’t. Because even here, he finds her. That’s how desperately he wants her back. She knows he’s no guardian angel, and his dark world isn’t exactly heaven, yet she can’t stay away . . . especially since he always appears when she least expects it, but exactly when she needs him most. But if she lets herself fall any further, she may just find herself back in the one place she most fears: the Underworld.

The myth of Persephone…darkly reimagined.

I’m a huge fan of Meg Cabot, having enjoyed  a couple of her series. When I saw this book I could not resist trying it. It is yet another book on my TBR pile, hopefully I’ll get to it soon. I also like the idea that it is a re-imagining of the Persephone myth – I can’t wait to see where Cabot goes with it.

Darkness Rising #2

The Calling by Kelley Armstrong, UK edition cover.

4. The Calling (Darkness Rising #2) by Kelley Armstrong (Published: 5th April 2012)

In The Calling, the sizzling second book in the Darkness Rising trilogy, New York Times bestselling author Kelley Armstrong pumps up the romance, danger, and suspense that left readers of The Gathering clamoring for more.

Maya Delaney’s paw-print birthmark is the sign of what she truly is—a skin-walker. She can run faster, climb higher, and see better than nearly anyone else. Experiencing intense connections with the animals that roam the woods outside her home, Maya knows it’s only a matter of time before she’s able to Shift and become one of them. And she believes there may be others in her small town with surprising talents.

Now, Maya and her friends have been forced to flee from their homes during a forest fire they suspect was deliberately set. Then they’re kidnapped, and after a chilling helicopter crash, they find themselves in the Vancouver Island wilderness with nothing but their extraordinary abilities to help them get back home. Plentiful action and romance in this second installment in the Darkness Rising series will keep readers enthralled to the very last page!

Kelley Armstrong is one of my absolute favourite authors, as such I have read pretty much all her work. I really enjoyed the earlier book in the series The Gathering (see my review here) and I’m hoping that this one lives up to my expectations.

Curse Workers #3

Black Heart by Holly Black, UK edition cover.

5. Black Heart (Curse Workers #3) by Holly Black (Published: 19th April 2012)

Cassel Sharpe knows he’s been used as an assassin, but he’s trying to put all that behind him. He’s trying to be good, even though he grew up in a family of con artists and cheating comes as easily as breathing to him. He’s trying to do the right thing, even though the girl he loves is inextricably connected with crime. And he’s trying to convince himself that working for the Feds is smart, even though he’s been raised to believe the government is the enemy.

But with a mother on the lam, the girl he loves about to take her place in the Mob, and new secrets coming to light, the line between what’s right and what’s wrong becomes increasingly blurred. When the Feds ask Cassel to do the one thing he said he would never do again, he needs to sort out what’s a con and what’s truth. In a dangerous game and with his life on the line, Cassel may have to make his biggest gamble yet—this time on love.

I really loved the first two books in the Curse Workers, so I absolutely cannot wait to read this. I love the world Black has created, and I think Cassel is a brilliant main character.

Everneath by Brodi Ashton

6. Everneath by Brodi Ashton

Last spring, Nikki Beckett vanished, sucked into an underworld known as the Everneath, where immortals Feed on the emotions of despairing humans. Now she’s returned- to her old life, her family, her friends- before being banished back to the underworld… this time forever.

As Nikki’s time grows short and her relationships begin slipping from her grasp, she’s forced to make the hardest decision of her life: find a way to cheat fate and remain on the Surface with Jack or return to the Everneath and become Cole’s…

I’ve heard some awesome things about this book, and I really love the cover. I also think the blurb sounds really, really, interesting and I can’t wait to get it 🙂

Hex Hall #3

Spell Bound by Rachel Hawkins, UK edition cover.

7. Spell Bound (Hex Hall #3) by Rachel Hawkins (Published: 29th March 2012)

Hailed as “impossible to put down,” the Hex Hall series has both critics and teens cheering. With a winning combination of romance, action, magic and humor, this third volume will leave readers enchanted.

Just as Sophie Mercer has come to accept her extraordinary magical powers as a demon, the Prodigium Council strips them away. Now Sophie is defenseless, alone, and at the mercy of her sworn enemies—the Brannicks, a family of warrior women who hunt down the Prodigium. Or at least that’s what Sophie thinks, until she makes a surprising discovery. The Brannicks know an epic war is coming, and they believe Sophie is the only one powerful enough to stop the world from ending. But without her magic, Sophie isn’t as confident.

Sophie’s bound for one hell of a ride—can she get her powers back before it’s too late?

I like the sounds of the blurb with this book, and the previous two books in the series had some promise. I look forward to seeing how this plays out.

The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel #6

The Enchantress by Michael Scott

8. The Enchantress (The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel, #6) by Michael Scott (Published: 2nd May 2013)

There is currently no blurb for this book that I can find :/

I’ve really enjoyed reading this series and I’m looking forward to seeing how Scott wraps things up. Sophie and Josh have been really interesting characters, and I’m kinda sad to know that once I finish this book that’ll be it. Still, I can’t wait to get started. B)

Sook Stackhouse #12

Deadlocked by Charlaine Harris, UK edition cover.

9. Deadlocked (Sookie Stackhouse #12) by Charlaine Harris (Published: 1st May 2012)

With Felipe de Castro, the Vampire King of Louisiana (and Arkansas and Nevada), in town, it’s the worst possible time for a body to show up in Eric Northman’s front yard—especially the body of a woman whose blood he just drank.
Now, it’s up to Sookie and Bill, the official Area Five investigator, to solve the murder. Sookie thinks that, at least this time, the dead girl’s fate has nothing to do with her. But she is wrong. She has an enemy, one far more devious than she would ever suspect, who’s out to make Sookie’s world come crashing down.

This is yet another series I have really enjoyed. Sookie is an awesome character in my opinion. I’m kinda interested to see where Harris is going with this, and how long she plans to keep the series going (or not). The blurb sounds super interesting and I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy of this so I can start reading.

Alpha and Omega #3

Fair Game by Patricia Briggs, UK edition cover.

10. Fair Game (Alpha and Omega #3) by Patricia Briggs

They say opposites attract. And in the case of werewolves Anna Latham and Charles Cornick, they mate. The son-and enforcer-of the leader of the North American werewolves, Charles is a dominant alpha. While Anna, an omega, has the rare ability to calm others of her kind.

Now that the werewolves have revealed themselves to humans, they can’t afford any bad publicity. Infractions that could have been overlooked in the past must now be punished, and the strain of doing his father’s dirty work is taking a toll on Charles.

Nevertheless, Charles and Anna are sent to Boston, when the FBI requests the pack’s help on a local serial killer case. They quickly realize that not only the last two victims were werewolves-all of them were. Someone is targeting their kind. And now Anna and Charles have put themselves right in the killer’s sights…

I really enjoyed both this and Brigg’s Mercedes Thompson series so I’m really happy that another book in this series has come out. I won’t be able to get hold of a copy until April, but it’s not stopped me drooling over the blurb. I think it sounds interesting and I look forward to reading it.

So, those were my Top Ten Books On My Spring To-Be-Read List. What are yours?

In My Mailbox (3)

In My Mailbox is hosted by The Story Siren, it is a weekly meme where people record what books they received that week. As I don’t receive books every week, I do the meme as and when I can.

This weeks all the books come courtesy of my Mum – thanks Mum!

I’ve already read this series (you can find my review for Tempestuous here) but I no longer own a copy of it, and I need to have one for my MA.

These books too are for use in my MA, though I haven’t read any of them yet. I’m really looking forward to reading This Must Be Love though as from my flick through it, it looks interesting.

Melvin Burgess is well-known for his young adult, social realist fiction since the publication of his novel Junk in 1996. Sara’s Face carries on this trend, with Burgess looking at the culture of celebrity and of beauty.

Review: Marked by P.C. and Kristin Cast

House of Night #1

Marked by P.C. and Kristin Cast, UK edition cover.

Title: Marked (A House of Night Novel)
Author:  P.C. and Kristin Cast
Genre:  Paranormal Romance, Young Adult
Publisher:  Atom (15th January 2009)
Source: Local library/Own copy
Blurb:

So the bad news was that I’d have to move into the House of Night, a private boarding scholl, known by all my friends as the vampyre finishing school, where I would spend the next four years going through bizarre and unnamable physical changes, as well as a  told and permanent life shake-up. And that’s only if the whole process didn’t kill me.

But the good news was that I wouldn’t have to take the geometry test tomorrow.

When sixteen-year-old Zoey is marked by the Tracker, she knows her old life is over. Now she has to leave her friends and family to join the House of Night school, where there’s only one subject Zoey needs to study: Vampyre 101.

Of course, there’s always a catch, and this one’s nice and simple: if you fail, you die . . .

Marked is the first book in P.C. and Kristin Cast’s House of Night series. As the book’s blurb suggests, Zoey gets sent to a school to learn how to be a vampyre. So the story is half high-school story, half vampyre story.

I have lived the life of a princess since the day I was born. But it did not bring me what I wanted. I am still trapped.

My beloved Ned speaks of love, freedom, a future. To walk with him in the forest, our raven soaring above us, is my only joy. But my father plans that I shall be betrothed to the King and I am afraid. Queens of England have a habit of dying. I have no desire to take the throne, no wish to find myself in the Tower of London.

Wife, Queen – I fear it will bring me to my knees.

Raven Queen weaves a mesmerising take of love and tragedy based on the life of Lady Jane Grey, all too often remembered as just a line in a history book.
